Paediatric Pulmonary Hypertension in Children

Paediatric pulmonary hypertension is a high pressure in the circulation of blood hypertension (PH) service through the lungs, leading to progressive heart failure. The prognosis has improved with recently developed drugs. Some patients also need a lung (or heart and lung) transplant.

Pulmonary Hypertension Treatment for Children

All patients are investigated, diagnosed, have their treatment for Pulmonary Hypertension determined and their care package organised at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust by a multi-disciplinary team.

The service is to provide care for patients with pulmonary hypertension including cardiac catheterisation, invasive radiology, echocardiography, non-invasive imaging (CT scanning, magnetic resonance imaging), exercise physiology and lung function testing. All these services are consultant led and delivered at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, enabling the skill and expertise of clinical staff to work together to provide treatment and care for these patients.

Patients may also need frequent access to microbiology, dental services, psychology, dietetics and other paediatric expertise available at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust.

Follow-up care for patients recovering from paediatric pulmonary hypertension is undertaken at one of the seven satellite clinics across the UK. The network is organised on a hub and spoke principle, the hub being Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust. Local services are provided at specialist centres in different parts of the country.
