NHS Specialised Services

What happens after the public consultation?

Although the public consultation on the future of children's heart services has now closed, the work of the Safe and Sustainable review is still ongoing.

Safe and Sustainable and the work of the JCPCT continues with the objective of making a final decision as soon as possible in 2012. The JCPCT will meet as planned on 8 November, 17 November and 14 December 2011.

The JCPCT will carefully consider a number of publications  before making its decision.  An independent third party has analysed the consultation responses and produced a comprehensive report, published on 24th August. The report, available here, will be submitted to the Joint Committee of Primary Care Trusts (JCPCT), the decision-making body for Safe and Sustainable. The report is one of a number of publications that the JCPCT will carefully consider to help them evaluate the options and make a final decision on the best configuration for children's congenital heart services in the future.

The JCPCT will also look in detail at the result of tests being carried out to analyse the viability of each option. Over the coming months a number of groups will report in more detail on key aspects of the proposed changes so that the JCPCT is provided with as much information as possible to inform their decision-making.
