In light of an independent analysis of mortality data that was received by us in September 2010, and which identified three children’s heart surgical centres (in addition to the John Radcliffe Hospital) where the difference between expected mortality and observed mortality was statistically significant, we will be further reviewing these centres on behalf of NHS commissioners. The centres are at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Whilst the analysis does not suggest that there are immediate safety concerns about any centres currently operating, it is in everybody’s interest that this new information is considered appropriately and carefully.
The further review of these centres will mean an extension to the project timeline for Safe and Sustainable. This is appropriate as the Joint Committee of PCTs is assessing extremely complex information. It is important that enough time is taken to ensure the eventual recommended options would produce the best possible care for children and their families. As such, it is likely that formal consultation will start in early 2011.
